Dinner for one

Dinner for one
Isn’t much fun
All I do
is sit here and chew
No one to talk with
Or to break bread
Just sit here alone nodding my head
Yes, I’m alone
Yes, I want wine.
Yes, I’m ready to order.
Yes, I’m having a good time.
Ok I was lying
but the waitress doesn’t care
So I sit in the corner
Wishing for somebody to be there
Dinner for one
It not what it’s cracked up to be
Even the bus boy tried to ignore me
Sure I have plenty time to think alone
What I did today and check email on my phone
But geez I am so terribly lonely
I just wish someone would join me
To make it worse there is too much food
So I have to decided what I want to do
Take it home to rot in my fridge with the mustard
Or leave it there for them to discard
Only if I had someone there
Then at least I be able to share
But instead it’s just me and other empty tables
doing the best that I am able
Maybe next time I’ll just get it to go
And sit in front of my tv and enjoy it alone
Dinner for one
It’s not much fun
But still better than having none.

Hi Paco, I just read your poem “Dinner for One” and it really hit me like a tom of bricks! My family and friends are nearly all gone now and I feel all alone. What I would do for just one friend like you! I have always thought how lucky your friends are to have a friend such as you, but this poem truly brought that to a point. I’m sure you have many friends, so I was curious how you came to write that poem. God bless you, Paco, please continue writing these jewels!

    Warm regards,

    Dave

    • The poem is a commentary on the starvation for communication. We all have the need to talk to people and to share our thoughts. Those that go without this can easily become depressed. The problem is that even with people around is we tend to talk less than ever before. We have cell phones that distract us even from the people in front of us. For me this has been a real experience. I wrote it while I was eating lunch by myself. While I have friends I don’t know anyone near where I work and no one from my work seems interested in going to lunch with me, so I deal with it. But aside from the reality of eating alone there is the feeling of loneliness that is most soul crushing. I fight with it from time to time but I do make sure to call my friends and go out a few times a month. Also I have joined meetup.com groups to enjoy a drink with people and share a few stories. The point is if you are feeling lonely there are other people just like you and if you take a chance maybe you can enjoy yourself.
